In the above image the fourth one is Print Screen key. It is part of my microsoft keyboard photograph that I took for this tutorial. The location of Print Scn key may be different for other manufacturers keyboards. You need to locate it if you found its position is not beside F12 key.
Foolow the steps below to copy your desktop and paste it in to MS paint:
- If you are viewing this tutorial, hold down Start key (this key located in between Ctrl and Alt keys) and hit key "M" (Start key+M key). This action will show you your desktop irrespective of number of windows opened. This action also saves some of your valuable time if you need to access your desktop frequently inbetween your works. In one sentence this shotcut eliminates minimising every open window.
- Make sure that you are viewing your desktop . Locate and Press once "PrtScn/SysRq" key on your keybaord. This action copies your complete desktop appearance to clipboard from which you can paste it on to any graphic editor (default MS paint).
- Well, now it is time to access our default MS Paint Graphic Editor. Click on "Start" Button on left side bottom corner of your computer and navigate to "Paint" (Start>>Programs>>Accessories>>Paint) and click to open MS Paint.
- Now we reached to final step. Just press and hold "Ctrl" key and hit key "V" (Ctrl+V). Your desktop picture will get pasted on to MS paint's white document and the screen will confuse you as if you are viewing your active desktop. Do not get confused. With" Select Tool" crop and resize the desktop screen shot to the required size and save it if you wish to preview later.
Pressing "PrtScn/SysRq" alone will enables copying of whole computer screen. Adding "Alt" key enables copying only active window, ie., whatever you see behind active window can be eliminated from copying with adding "Alt" Option to "PrtScn/SysRq".
To check"Alt" + "PrtScn/SysRq" follow the steps below:
- While viewing this tutorial click on "Start" button ( bottom left corner of the taskbar) to access menu and click on "Run" option (Keyboard shortcut keys Start+R). Type "notepad" without "apostrophes" in Run dialogue box text field and click "OK" to open notepad over this window. Minimise notepad window if your view is maximum. It means you should able to see part of your tutorial window below from all the four corners of the notepad.
- Make sure your notepad window is active. Press and hold "Alt" key and hit "PrtScn/SysRq" key (Alt+PrtScn/SysRq).
- Open new Ms Paint window ( (Start>>Programs>>Accessories>>Paint).
Press and hold "Ctrl" key and hit key "V" to paste notepad screenshot on to the MS Paint window. Observe the notepad image. You won't find any background. This way with "PrtScn/SysRq" key you can copy to clipboard whole or active screenshots of any window and paste on to any graphic editor's window.
