Color picker is just like artist's color palette where graphic designer can choose and mix colors. It is essential to know briefly about color picker beofre proceeding to other tutorials.
In this tutorial we going to learn about:
- Setting Foreground and Background colors to default with Keyboard Shortcut Key "D".
- Switching Foreground and Background colors.
- Selecting a color for given Hexadecimal color value.
- Selecting a color in Color Picker window and knowing its Hexadeciaml Value.

Foreground and Background colors
Start Photoshop.
Before opening a new document observe foreground and background color boxes in the toolbox. The colors you see in the foreground and background were set previously when you closed photoshop. If you can't see a tools go to Window menu and choose tools.
Press Key "X" on Keyboad to see the switching of foreground and background colors. Hit one or two times to see rapid switching. Now press Key "D" on keyboard. The colors will reset to black as foreground and white as background. You can set to default wherever it is needed by pressing Key "D".
The small Icon on top right (curve with arrows both ends) is for switch foreground and background and the black and white icons left below is for default colors which can be operated with short cut keys "X" and "D" on Keyboard.
Before opening new document let us play and know about Color Picker.
- Set foreground/background color to default by hitting Key "D" on Keyboard.
- Click inside Black foreground color box to open Color Picker window.

To set this #abc123 color, while refering to above Color Picker screen shot follow the Step -1 and to set any other colors follow the Step - 2 mentioned below:
Step -1 - Typing a Hexadecimal code for color .
- Type abc123 in the hexadecimal # code box (Refer red arrow Sl. No.
in the above Color Picker screen shot) and click OK. You will have color as foreground color. Hexadecimal color values are very useful when we need convey the color scheme to designers over telephone or through emails. It is easy to convey primary colors like blue, red, yellow, green and black colors but when it comes to variation of colors hexadecimal code is great help to tell what color exactly we need for our graphic designs.
Step -2 - Selecting colors in Color Picker .
- Click in side foreground
color box in the tool box to open Color Picker window.
- Leave all default settings in color picker and make sure that radio button of "H" (Hue) is checked (refer red arrow Sl. No. 4 in above Color Picker Screen shot).
- To select particular color move the white left and right slider (refer red arrow Sl. No.1) up or down on vertical box as per requirement and observe large Square box left side. Stop moving the white sliders when you see the required color in left side box.
- Click and drag the mouse inside left hand side box (refer red arrow Sl. No.2) while observing foreground and background color box right side (refer red arrow Sl No.3). Here the previous foreground color will stay in the bottom and new color will appear on top which going to be required new foreground color.
- When you get required color in the right hand side color box (refer red arrow Sl. No. 3) stop moving the mouse. Note down and remember the new hexadecimal value at bottom (Refer red arrow Sl. .No.5) in case if you need to use same color for other desings. Hexadecimal values start with #.
Hexadecimal value of lemon green color above is #abc123.
That is all about selecting a color in Color Picker.
