Designing Transparent Button - Button Tips

This tutorial meant for learners entirely unfamiliar with creating buttons in flash and obviously deal with the flash basics.

Transparent buttons are transparent hence they do not need different colors for mouse hover or mouse down function. Let us refresh with button's behaviour. As we know Button symbols are different from graphic and movie clip symbols. Butoon timeline is unique.

Before proceeding to read rest of this tutorial please download button.zip source .fla file.

Download button.fla :
Download button.zip and unzip. Open button.fla file in flash and double click button on stage to view its timeline.

A fancy button may have more than one layer since the fancier look need to bring by adding more layers for other graphic effects. This tutorial about simple button having single layer.
  • Click and Move Play head (red rectangle over Up frame) towards right. The button on stage changes its colors according to Play Head position.
  • Click back arrow (beside scene icon) to go back to button's main timeline.
  • Press and hold Ctrl Key and Hit Enter button to play the button.

  • Move your mouse over the button, click, release and observe its behaviour.

  • When you move mouse Over the button the Play head moves to Over frame. When you click and hold on button (Mouse down) the play head moves to Down position. Hence the button changes its colors according to play head position in the time line. When you release your mouse the mouse action equals to Over position hence the color chnages over to orange. When you move mouse away, the button resotres to its Up state. These action only can be seen during buttton editing.
  • The Hit frame state left blank. Hit frame is used to desinging Transparent Butoons. With Hit frame we can define transparent active area to click. Graphic element placed in Hit frame can't be seen while playing. Let us examine follwoing two buttons to better understand clickable area.
