By adding or subtracting, it is possible to create new shapes.This tuorial explains a simple method of adding or
subtracting or both.
- Adding:
- Follow the steps below for adding another shape to previously drawn shape.
- Draw elipse shape
on stage using shape tool.

- Now select Rectangle shape tool
in the tool box and make sure that previously drawn elipse in selected
condition.
- Press and hold Shift Key on Keyboard and drag to draw a small square over previously drawn elipse shape
as shown in below example. This will add square shpe to previously drawn elipse.

- Subtracting:
- Follow the steps below for subtracting a portion from previously drawn shape.
- Make sure that whole shape on stage in selected condition.
- Press and hold Alt key on Keyboard and drag to draw a Square shape over previously drawn shape as
shown in below example:

- Click on Background layer to deselect the shape on stage. The final shape should look similar to below

Notice that Adding or Subtracting will take place on single layer and won't create an extra layer. ie., all three
shapes are part of one layer hence the whole shape can further be modified/transformed. Make sure that the
shape is active before adding or subtracting. Active (selected) shape will show gray zig zag border.

For clean
look click inside layer palette's "Vector Mask Thumbnail" and click again to select the shape.

Adding and Subtracting is useful while designing logos and icons. Use elipse shape tool with help of Alt key as
explained above to subtract (cut) curved portion from previously drawn artwork (shape). With Line (shape) tool
you can cut (Subtract) vertical and horzontal lines. Always design larger sizes and later bring down the size as
required.
